Suffolk is the largest city by land area in Virginia and most of what we mulch here is measured in acres, not square feet. Open ground, farm parcels and timber edges, cleared in place.
Room to Actually Work
Out past Driver, Chuckatuck, Holland and Whaleyville the parcels get big and the constraints change. There are no neighbors two feet away and no alley to squeeze through. What you get instead is distance, soft ground near the Nansemond and the Dismal Swamp, and long stretches of fence line and field edge that have not been touched in years. That is close to ideal for a mulching head.
Soil runs from sandy loam in the north around Harbour View to heavy clay through the farm country. On the clay, the argument for mulching over conventional clearing gets stronger: no loaded trucks cutting ruts across a field you have to farm next season, and no haul off from a property that is a long way from anywhere that takes debris.

Farms and Working Land
A lot of our Suffolk work is for people who need the land productive, not landscaped. That changes the spec. Field edges get taken back square, ditch banks get opened so they drain, and lanes get widened enough for equipment rather than for a car. If the lane itself needs rebuilding once it is opened, that is gravel drive work, and we can do both in one mobilization instead of two.
Mulching or Clearing
If a barn, shop, house or pad is going in, the stumps have to come out and you want clearing and grubbing. For everything else on a working property, mulching is generally faster and considerably cheaper. We will price both if you are undecided.

Do you travel out to Whaleyville and Holland?
Yes. Suffolk is well inside our service area and the rural end of it is a lot of what we do.
How is mulching priced on a large parcel?
Usually by the acre or by the hour depending on how variable the density is. On a big mixed parcel an hourly rate is often fairer to both sides, and we will explain which we are proposing and why.
Can you work around standing timber I want to keep?
Yes, that is one of the things mulching is best at. We mark what stays before we start.
Will the mulch hurt my pasture?
No. It breaks down and adds organic matter. If you are seeding straight away we can spread it thinner in the areas you are planting.
What about wet ground near the river or the swamp?
Tracked equipment handles a lot of it. Past a certain saturation we should wait, and we will tell you rather than rut your field.
