Why This Goes Wrong So Often
A pool that is simply pushed in and covered with dirt will settle, and it will keep settling. Water gets trapped in the shell, the fill was never compacted in lifts, and two or three years later there is a depression in the yard shaped exactly like a swimming pool. Doing it properly the first time costs more up front and less in total.
How We Do It
- Drain the pool and disconnect and cap all plumbing and electrical
- Demolish and remove the upper walls, coping and decking
- Break out the floor thoroughly so the shell can never hold water
- Remove the debris rather than burying it in the hole
- Backfill in compacted lifts with clean, suitable engineered fill
- Finish to grade with topsoil, pitched for positive drainage
Full Removal vs. Partial Removal
Partial removal (breaking the bottom, collapsing the walls inward and filling) is the common, less expensive option and is fine for a yard that will stay a yard. Full removal takes out the entire shell and is what you need if you ever intend to build a structure or an addition over that footprint. Partial removals often have to be disclosed when you sell. We will explain both and what each one means for your property before you decide.
Access Is the Cost Driver
Most pools are in backyards behind gates and fences. Whether a machine and a dump truck can reach the pool, or whether everything has to come out through a four-foot side yard, moves the price more than the size of the pool does.
